Laura Fahey has been announced as the winner of the joint Manchester Metropolitan University and UKFast scholarship for this year's MBA programme. Having received a number of applicants of “incredible calibre”, Laura was – according to UKFast’s CEO, Lawrence Jones MBE – “the perfect candidate”.
An impressive application
In the application process, Laura impressed Lawrence and the UKFast team with her 60-second video pitch that featured her entrepreneurial business idea.. The £6,000 scholarship will see Laura gain guidance from Lawrence himself, whose training and development centre represents his £4.5 million investment into education in business as well as the digital economy.
“The only word I could come up with was ‘wow’”
Lawrence said that Laura “displayed the core values and attitude UKFast are always on the lookout for. She has exhibited an incredible level of passion, innovation and dynamism and I am extremely proud to be able to help her on her journey, where I can.”
As Assistant Director of Finance at BLM Laura expressed her intention to develop a deeper understanding of different businesses and industries, and to take that back to the company.
“I was absolutely amazed that I’d been selected. I’m looking forward to broadening my academic knowledge and gaining confidence in new subject matters,” said Laura of receiving the scholarship. “The only word I could come up with was ‘wow’”
Supporting a thriving digital economy
The UKFast scholarship stood out to Laura “as it has a connection to a Manchester-based business,” and “the possibility of working with Lawrence Jones whilst studying was an added appeal”.
In recognition for his contributions to the North West’s thriving digital economy in his role as the CEO of UKFast, Lawrence was awarded an honorary Doctor of Business Administration. He spoke of the scholarship as making “absolute sense”, adding that it is essential to give young entrepreneurs access to the right connections. “The MBA from Manchester Metropolitan put students in touch with some of the greatest business people out there. I’m confident that Laura will be counted among them soon.”
Taking a business career to the next level
Dr Sara Ward, MBA and Executive Programmes Director has personally welcomed Laura to the programme: “Many congratulations to Laura on getting the UKFast MBA Scholarship. I’m sure taking part in such a highly-valued qualification, whilst being mentored by the founder of such an innovative company, will help Laura take her business career to the next level at BLM.
